12 Steps to Select a Criminal Defense Attorney

Finding a criminal defense lawyer that will aggressively defend your case can be difficult. When interviewing potential criminal lawyers there are some elements that you should be aware of and how to ask the right questions. We’ve put together a list of 12 things that should help you in your quest to find expert criminal defense.

  1. Choose an attorney who specializes in the field you are looking for – Go for an attorney who is specialized in the area of defense that you specifically require. Most attorneys deal with all sorts of criminal cases while others concentrate their practices in a particular area like rape or theft etc. You should get hire lawyer who is experienced in his field and who will be able to assist you better.
  2. Go for a Private Attorney – Public defenders are not the best option for criminal cases as they have more than a hundred functional case files to deal with at one point in time. So it is hard for any public attorney to give the right amount of time to your case.
  3. Make sure you know what kind of qualities you are looking for in your lawyer – Do you want an older experienced lawyer or a young energetic one? You have to decide on your priorities beforehand so that your search becomes easier.
  4. Discuss lawyers with your friends or colleagues – Friends and family can usually provide you with good advice based on their experience and contacts. So there is no harm in discussing your options with regards to attorneys with them.
  5. Check out the local organizations the lawyer belongs to – National Association of Criminal Defense, local bar associations, ABA criminal justice and State association of criminal defense are some of the common organizations to which good criminal lawyers are associated with.
  6. Do not be fooled by slogans – Signs like “district attorney” and “100% wins” should not attract you to an attorney; rather the personal profile and the amount of time he/she can spend on your case should be your priorities for choosing a lawyer.
  7. Research if the lawyer is attached to the Bar Association – Colleagues at the bar association can give you a good idea about the repute of the criminal attorney you are considering for your case.
  8. See the rating (Martindale-Hubbell) of the lawyer – AV, BV and CV are the respective ratings for lawyers based on ethics, goodness of practices and other similar measures. Looking at the rates will help you judge the lawyer in a better way.
  9. Check the past career of the lawyer – A teaching experience or authoring a legal document can add to the credibility of the lawyer.
  10. Do not be afraid to discuss the details of your case – The lawyer needs to know every detail of your case, make sure that you trust the attorney completely and that he is well aware of all the facts and figures related to your case. Any information kept hidden can lead to a lot of problems for you.
  11. Inquire the experience level of the lawyer who is being assigned your case – Usually there are a number of lawyers in a private firm, so you need to make sure that your case is being handled by a well experienced lawyer who knows what he/she is going.
  12. Do not be fooled by win-lose ratio – You should know there is no particular list of best lawyers, so do not be deceived by win-lose ratio that lawyers quote.
