How a Drug Lawyer Can Help You in The Long Run

If you have found yourself in being in the unenviable position of being arrested or charged with a drug crime, whether it be possession or cultivation, a good drug lawyer can make all of the difference now and far into the future. A competent defense attorney will let you know about all of your rights during the criminal process, and they can make the difference between a dismissal and a long jail sentence. Being charged with a drug crime is a very serious matter that can affect every aspect of the defendant’s life, including family, future employment, high financial costs and loss of freedom. Anyone charged with a drug crime of any severity should seek out the best possible drug lawyer immediately. Not doing so can mean a lifetime of unnecessary costs and hardship.

A drug arrest can be the first step in a very long process of arraignments, pre-trial motions, hearings, trials and sentencing that can lead to many years or decades in prison. Drug defendants need lawyers that have the long-term well being of their client’s in mind. A good drug lawyer isn’t just there for one step of the process. They need to be competent and aggressive during the entire length of the criminal justice process to ensure proper justice and due process under the constitution. The results of these criminal proceedings will affect the defendants life far into the future. Drug offenses are taken very seriously by the prosecution and courts; a good drug lawyer will approach a case just as seriously and aggressively.

Prosecutors primarily rely on physical evidence to get convictions in criminal drug trials. A good drug lawyer will work tirelessly to suppress evidence so that it can not be used at trial. They will also work every angle in order to get grounds for dismissal. In cases where the prosecution has ample evidence, a good drug lawyer won’t quit until they have found some means of mitigating, lowering or dismissing the charges. Good attorneys know that good people get caught up in very bad situations. They know that a criminal conviction can affect a person negatively for the rest of their life. That is why it is so important for them to ensure that justice is served, and that prosecutors don’t get away with punishing the defendant more than justice would require.

Over the last three decades, the war on drugs has lead to an unprecedented amount of people being convicted and sentenced to significant prison time for many different drugs, ranging from marijuana o methamphetamine. A conviction for possession, cultivation, trafficking or distribution can mean a lifetime of being kept out of certain jobs, being unable to vote, losing custody rights and being prevented from receiving public benefits. Something that holds such serious consequences needs to be approached seriously by a competent drug lawyer. Plea bargains made by a drug attorney can lead to reduced sentences and more lenient conditions while under probation, which can make life much easier in the long run.
